BACKCOUNTRYONTARIO TRAVEL

Nestled in the heart of Ontario’s Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, Anstruther Lake offers a pristine escape for boating enthusiasts. On a warm July summer day, I set out to explore this hidden gem.
As I launched my boat from the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park Anstruther Lake access point, the first thing that struck me was the clarity of the water. The lake's surface shimmered under the sunlight, reflecting the lush green forests that lined its shores. The gentle lapping of the waves against the boat was a soothing soundtrack to the breathtaking scenery.
One of the many highlights of my trip was discovering the secluded coves, a secret waterfall, and inlets that dotted the shoreline. These quiet spots provided the perfect opportunity to drop anchor, relax and chill.
Keep in mind that the Anstruther Lake is dotted with cottages throughout the lake so you are likely to come into contact with the occasional powerboat. There is also a full service marina where you could stock up and launch your boat.
As the day progressed, I ventured to the northern end of the lake, where rocky outcrops and small islands created a picturesque landscape. Here, I decided to beach my boat and take a swim near the access point to Rathbun Lake. The experience of floating in the clear, cool lake, surrounded by the serene beauty of the park, was nothing short of magical.
At the access point, there is a short 162m portage to Rathbun Lake. It is worth the short trek to check out the beautiful and scenic lake where many have ventured before me. Those with an adventurous spirit could also book a site with Ontario Parks and do some backcountry camping on Rathbun, Copper, and Serpentine Lakes.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I reluctantly made my way back to the access point. The tranquility of the lake and the unspoiled beauty of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park left a lasting impression on me. Anstruther Lake is a haven for anyone seeking a serene and picturesque boating experience, and I left with a promise to return and explore its waters once more.
