A Winter Hike on the Black Walnut Trail at Short Hills Provincial Park
TRIP REPORTS

If you're craving a little outdoor adventure this winter, the Black Walnut Trail at Short Hills Provincial Park is the perfect place to get your nature fix, and some much needed such during this time of year, without venturing too far. I decided to take a quick hike there recently, and let me tell you, it was just what I needed!
As soon as I hit the trail, the quiet of the snow-covered woods instantly made everything feel peaceful. The conditions were windy, but the rolling hills provided a surprising amount of shelter from the wind. The trees were bare, and with the sun shining through the branches, it was like stepping into a winter wonderland. The crisp air was refreshing, and honestly, it felt like a perfect break from the hustle and bustle.
The Black Walnut Trail loop itself is pretty short—only about 5.3 kilometers—so it's a nice option if you're looking for a quick getaway. It’s not too steep, so you won’t be out of breath, but you’ll still get that satisfying feeling of being in nature. The trail winds through a mix of forests and open fields, with lots of spots to stop and take it all in. Keep an eye out for wildlife—there are birds flitting around, and if you're lucky, you might spot a falcon or two.
A few things to note: the trail can be a bit slippery in spots, especially if the snow has been packed down by previous hikers. Definitely wear sturdy boots! And if you’re into photography, the winter light makes for some stunning shots, so bring your camera or phone.
All in all, this little hike was exactly the kind of winter escape I needed. It wasn’t too long or intense, but it was the perfect way to recharge while soaking up some natural beauty. If you're looking for a quick, easy, and scenic winter hike, the Black Walnut Trail has got you covered.
