A Day Trip to Dorset: Cruising the SS Bigwin and Climbing the Fire Tower
TRIP REPORTSONTARIO TRAVEL

If you're looking for a perfect day trip that combines stunning nature and a hint of adventure, Dorset, Ontario, is the place to be. Recently, I had the chance to explore this charming town, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget!
Setting Sail on the SS Bigwin
My day began with excitement as I boarded the SS Bigwin, a historic boat that has been a staple of the area for decades. The surprisingly quiet hum of the engine and the soft lapping of waves set the tone for a relaxing cruise on Lake of Bays. As the SS Bigwin glided across the water, the breathtaking views of lush greenery and rocky shorelines unfolded before me.
The captain shared stories about the lake’s rich history, including tales of the glamorous Bigwin Island Resort, which once drew summer visitors from far and wide. With a gentle breeze and the sun warming our faces, it was a truly relaxing experience, surrounded by nature.
Conquering the Dorset Fire Tower
After the delightful cruise, it was time for a little more adventure. I headed to the Dorset Fire Tower, a short drive away from the lake. Parking worked out to six dollars per person provided you were willing to park a little further from the tower. The walk from the parking lot took approximately fifteen minutes. As I approached the tower, the anticipation built—this was not your run of the mill lookout.
Once I reached the top, which worked out to 142 steps in total, the view took my breath away. The climb up is not for the faint at heart. From the elevated vantage point, I could see the sparkling lakes and expansive forests stretching out in every direction. It was a reminder of the natural beauty that makes this region so special.
After the descending to the bottom, I enjoyed the 1.9 km Dorset Scenic Tower Hiking trail. It is a trail of moderate difficulty, but the lookouts along the way were worth the effort. The final stretch of the trail was the most challenging because as they say - what goes down, must come up... or something like that.
A Perfect Ending
After descending from the tower, I spent some time exploring the quaint shops and local cafes in downtown Dorset. I even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the quaint Oxtongue Craft Cabin and Gallery.
Whether you're cruising on the SS Bigwin or taking in the views from the Dorset Fire Tower, this picturesque town offers the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. If you’re seeking a getaway that celebrates nature and history, I highly recommend a day trip to Dorset!
