A Day of Boating to the Benjamin Islands: Launching from McBean Harbour
ONTARIO TRAVEL

Nestled in the pristine waters of the North Channel, the Benjamin Islands are a hidden gem for boating enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Our adventure began at the boat launch in McBean Harbour, a perfect starting point for a day on the water.
Morning at McBean Harbour
As the sun rose, we prepared our boat for the journey. The air was fresh with a hint of pine, and the calm waters mirrored the clear blue sky. McBean Harbour, just a short drive from Massey Ontario, provided the ideal starting point for our departure. We loaded up with supplies for the day – snacks, drinks, and, of course, a camera to capture the stunning scenery ahead.
The Boat Launch
Unlike the remarkably smooth drive to McBean Harbour boat launch, the launch was anything but smooth. The motor started after the third pull, but after a few seconds, we realized that is wasn't shooting water. After a quick diagnostic, we discovered that the culprit was sand clogging the telltale. With the boat motor repaired and everything in place, we set off towards the Benjamin Islands. The journey itself was part of the adventure, with the first leg of the journey navigating around the west end of Fox Island. The landscape around us shifted from the gentle curves of the shoreline to the rugged beauty of the islands, characterized by their distinctive pink granite and dense greenery.
Arrival at the Benjamin Islands
After a bit of chop near the northwest and western end of Fox Island, the North Benjamin Island came into view, its beauty even more breathtaking up close. The islands, renowned for their unique rock formations and crystal-clear waters, did not disappoint. We anchored in a quiet cove, the water so clear we could see fish swimming beneath us.
Exploring the Islands
We spent the afternoon exploring the islands, each turn revealing new sights. The granite rocks, smoothed by centuries of wind and water, provided perfect spots for sunbathing and picnicking. The serenity of the place, broken only by the calls of birds and the gentle lapping of waves, was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Afternoon Swim and Relaxation
In the afternoon, we enjoyed a quick dip in one of the quiet coves. The cool, refreshing lake was a perfect way to relax and cool off after our hike. Floating in the clear, calm waters with the sun shining down, it was easy to forget the world beyond the Benjamin Islands.
Heading Back
As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we reluctantly prepared to head back to McBean Harbour. The return journey was marked by a sense of satisfaction and peace, the day’s adventures replaying in our minds. The sight of McBean Harbour as we approached felt like coming full circle, completing a perfect day on the water.
Conclusion
A day boating to the Benjamin Islands, launching from McBean Harbour, is an experience that blends adventure with tranquility. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a first-time explorer, this trip offers a slice of North Channel’s natural beauty that will leave you refreshed and inspired.
